A male with prostatitis has inflammation of the prostate gland, usually due to an infection.

There are two main types of prostatitis:

• Acute prostatitis:
• Bacterial infection that causes sudden onset of fever and pain
• Chronic prostatitis:
• Bacterial infection that causes mild symptoms that persist for longer than two months
