The evaluation of priapism begins with a history and physical exam.

Physical findings in someone with priapism include:

Prolonged erection
Tenderness of the penis
Difficulty urinating

Tests that may be used to evaluate priapism include:

Blood test for sickle cell anemia
Blood clotting studies:

Prothrombin time

Complete blood count
Platelet count
Doppler ultrasound
