What is priapism?
A male with priapism has a painful, prolonged erection of the penis. Priapism occurs most commonly in young males. Priapism may be associated with leukemia, sickle cell anemia, or a medication side effect.

What are the symptoms of priapism?
Symptoms that may occur with priapism include penile pain and the inability to urinate.

How does the doctor treat priapism?
Treatment for priapism may include compression of the penis, oral medications, medication injections, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications for pain, narcotic pain medications, and surgery.
