A woman with postpartum hemorrhage has excessive vaginal bleeding after childbirth. Some experts define it as a loss of greater than 500 cc of blood from the genital tract following deliver of the baby.

Severe bleeding may be treated with a blood transfusion or by performing a hysterectomy.
