The evaluation of port wine stains begins with a history and physical examination. Images

Physical findings in someone with port wine stains include:
  • Pink, red or purple patch of skin:
    • Usually pink during infancy
    • Becomes red during puberty
    • Usually becomes purple during middle age
    • May grow as child grows
    • Usually located on the head or neck
The diagnosis of port wine stains is made during physical exam. Tests are not necessary to evaluate port wine stains.
