What is polio?
A person with polio has an infection of the nervous system, caused by the Poliovirus. The infection can result in paralysis. Polio is very rare in the US because vaccinations for polio are given routinely during childhood.

What are the symptoms of polio?
Initial symptoms of polio include a cough, diarrhea, headache, vomiting, fever, muscle aches, muscle spasms, neck pain, neck stiffness, and increased sensitivity to bright light. Symptoms of worsening polio include leg weakness, arm weakness, facial weakness, paralysis, difficulty swallowing, difficulty speaking, and changes in vision.

How does the doctor treat polio?
There is no cure for polio. Treatment for polio includes acetaminophen or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications for pain and fever, and physical therapy.
