A person with pneumonia has inflammation of the small air passageways and alveoli in the lung, usually due to an infection.

The inflammation can block the flow of oxygen into the bloodstream.

There are three main types of pneumonia:

• Viral pneumonia
• Bacterial pneumonia
• Fungal pneumonia
