The evaluation of pleuritis begins with a history and physical exam.

Physical findings in someone with pleuritis may include:

• Friction rub:
• Heard during examination of the lungs with a stethoscope
• Difficulty breathing
• Fever
• Rapid breathing rate

Testing may be required to find the cause of pleuritis.

Tests that may be used to evaluate pleuritis include:

• Chest x-ray
• Pulse oximetry
• Electrocardiogram
• VQ scan
• Duplex doppler ultrasound in the legs
• Thoracentesis:
• To remove a collection of fluid between the outside of the lung and the inside of the chest wall
• The fluid is examined
