Placental Abruption Definition
Common names:
A pregnant woman with placental abruption has separation of the placenta from the inside wall of the uterus before delivery of the fetus. This reduces the blood supply to the fetus, which can result in death of the fetus. Placental abruption occurs in about 1 percent of pregnancies in the US.
