Common names:
A pregnant woman with placenta previa has a placenta that blocks the opening of the uterus into the birth canal. Placenta previa is a serious cause of vaginal bleeding in the third trimester (after 24 weeks) of pregnancy. Placenta previa occurs in about 1 out of every 250 births.
