A person with pinworms has an intestinal infection caused by tiny white worms, called Enterobius vermicularis. The infection causes intense itching around the anus. About 20 percent of children between 5 and 10 years old are infected with pinworms each year in the US.

Symptoms of pinworms include severe anal itching and the presence of tiny white thread-like worms around the anus. Additional symptoms of pinworms include bedwetting, insomnia, anorexia, and vaginal itching.
