Pilonidal Abscess Underlying Cause
A pilonidal abscess is caused by infection by bacteria that are normally on the surface of the skin. The bacteria enter the pilonidal cyst and start to grow. Pus collects in the cyst as the body attempts to fight the infection, and an abscess forms.
