A person with pharyngeal cancer has abnormal cells in the pharynx that multiply out of control. These cells can form tumors and spread to other parts of the body. Pharyngeal cancer also includes cancer of the tonsils and adenoids. The cause of pharyngeal cancer is unknown, but genetics seems to play a role in determining risk.

Symptoms of pharyngeal cancer may include an oral lesion, lump in the throat, or ulcer in the throat. Additional symptoms of pharyngeal cancer include hoarseness, sore throat, red throat, bad breath, difficulty speaking, difficulty swallowing, ear pain, and swollen lymph glands in the neck.

Treatment for pharyngeal cancer may include surgery, chemotherapy, or radiation therapy.
