Personality Disorder Borderline Evaluation

The evaluation of borderline personality disorder includes an interview by a psychologist or psychiatrist.

Special questionnaires and tests have been developed to aid in the diagnosis.

Personality Disorder Borderline Diagnostic Criteria

The diagnosis of borderline personality disorder requires five or more of the following characteristics:

  • Efforts to avoid abandonment
  • A pattern of unstable and intense interpersonal relationships
  • Identity disturbance that may include a poor sense of self
  • Impulsive behavior in two of the following areas: spending money, sex, substance abuse, reckless driving, or binge eating
  • Recurrent suicidal behavior, gestures, threats, or self-mutilation
  • Unstable mood: intense episodes of depression, irritability, or anxiety usually lasting a few hours
  • Constant feelings of emptiness
  • Inappropriate, intense anger or difficulty controlling anger
  • Stress-related paranoid feelings
