The evaluation of peritonsillar abscess begins with a history and physical exam.

Physical findings in someone with a peritonsillar abscess may include:

• Red throat
• Throat swelling:
• Swollen tonsils
• One tonsil is larger than the other
• Trismus:
• Inability to open the mouth
• Occurs due to severe throat pain and swelling
• Pus on the tonsils
• Swollen glands in the neck
• Bad breath

Tests are not necessary to make the diagnosis of peritonsillar abscess.

Tests that may be used to evaluate a peritonsillar abscess include:

• Throat culture
• Rapid strep test
• CT scan of the head and neck
