The evaluation of peripheral neuropathy begins with a history and physical exam.

Physical findings in someone with peripheral neuropathy may include:

• High blood pressure
• Difficulty walking
• Leg numbness (bilateral)
• Leg weakness (bilateral)
• Leg swelling (bilateral)
• Foot swelling (bilateral)
• Skin ulcers on the legs
• Weak pulses in the wrists and feet
• Rash on the legs
• Decreased reflexes in the legs

Tests that may be used to evaluate peripheral neuropathy include:

• Urinalysis
• Hemoglobin A1c
• Blood levels of vitamin B12
• Blood levels of folic acid
• Spinal tap
• VDRL
• Electromyogram
• Nerve conduction studies
• Nerve biopsy
• CT scanning of the brain
• MRI scan of the brain
