A person with patellar tendinitis has inflammation of the tendon that connects the kneecap to the tibia (shin). The most common causes of patellar tendinitis include strenuous exercise and drug side effects.

What are the symptoms of patellar tendinitis?
Symptoms of patellar tendinitis are similar to knee bursitis. Symptoms include knee pain that worsens while running, jumping, or climbing. Additional symptoms of patellar tendinitis may include knee swelling, and tenderness or warmth over the tendon.

How does the doctor treat patellar tendinitis?
The treatment for patellar tendinitis includes rest, cold compresses, elevation, crutches, an elastic wrap, physical therapy, and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications for pain. Additional treatment for severe patellar tendinitis may include corticosteroid injections or oral corticosteroids.
