What is parotitis?
A person with parotitis has inflammation of the parotid gland. The most common causes of parotitis include viral infections, bacterial infections, and parotid gland stones. Parotitis is much more common in females. Images

What are the symptoms of parotitis?
Symptoms of parotitis include facial pain, facial swelling, swelling over the angle of the jaw, facial tenderness, jaw pain, inability to open the mouth, dental pain, mouth or tongue swelling, and pus draining into the mouth.

How does the doctor treat parotitis?
Treatment for parotitis may include warm compresses, saltwater gargles, and antibiotics. Additional treatment for parotitis may include surgery to remove a stone from the parotid duct or to drain an infection.
