A person with parotitis has inflammation of the parotid gland. The most common causes of parotitis include viral infections, bacterial infections, and parotid gland stones. Parotitis is much more common in females.

Symptoms of parotitis include facial pain, facial swelling, swelling over the angle of the jaw, facial tenderness, jaw pain, inability to open the mouth, dental pain, mouth or tongue swelling, and pus draining into the mouth.
