A woman with ovarian cystic disease has abnormally large, painful ovarian cysts. Ovarian cysts are fluid-filled sacs that form in the ovary. They occur normally in all women prior to menopause.

Large ovarian cysts can cause lower abdominal pain, low back pain, and vaginal bleeding. Most cases of ovarian cyst disease resolve without treatment. Surgical treatment of large cysts is very successful.
