A person with osteoporosis has weakened bones, caused by loss of the normal structure to the bone. This results in a decrease in bone mass and bone density. Images

Osteoporosis usually causes no symptoms, but weakens the bones and makes them more prone to breaking. Fractures of the wrist, hip, and spine are more common in those with osteoporosis.

Osteoporosis occurs naturally with aging. About 35 percent of women in the US develop osteoporosis.
