What is Osgood Schlatter disease?
A person with Osgood Schlatter disease has inflammation of the tibial tubercle. The tibial tubercle is a boney prominence in the front of the knee, just below the kneecap. The exact cause for Osgood Schlatter disease is unknown, but it seems to be related to intense leg exercise. Osgood Schlatter disease occurs in teenagers. About 10 percent of teenage male and female athletes develop Osgood Schlatter disease. Images

What are the symptoms of Osgood Schlatter disease?
Symptoms of Osgood Schlatter disease include knee pain, swelling, and tenderness over the tibial tubercle, just below the kneecap. Knee pain worsens while running or climbing. Pain is relieved by resting and straightening the knee.

How does the doctor treat Osgood Schlatter disease?
Treatment for Osgood Schlatter disease may include rest, cold compresses, crutches, a knee brace, and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications for pain. Additional treatment may include physical therapy and muscle strengthening exercises.
