There are two main types of myositis ossificans:

  • Myositis ossificans circumscripta:
  • Myositis ossificans progressiva or fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva:
    • Rare genetic condition characterized by skeletal abnormalities and abnormal bone formation in tissues outside of the bone
