The evaluation of muscle strains begins with a history and physical exam.

Physical findings in someone with a muscle strain may include:

• Abnormal bulge in the muscle
• Deformity
• Swelling
• Bruising
• Weakness or fatigue

Testing is usually not required to make the diagnosis of a muscle strain. Depending on the injury, x-rays may be necessary to exclude fractures.
