Multiple Sclerosis Underlying Cause
The cause for multiple sclerosis is not known. The immune system mistakenly destroys the lining that covers nerves, called myelin. Myelin is a protein that coats the nerve fibers and acts as an insulator. Without myelin, the nerves in the brain and spinal cord malfunction and this is what causes the symptoms of multiple sclerosis.
