MS Underlying Cause
The cause for multiple sclerosis is not known. The immune system mistakenly destroys the lining that covers nerves, called myelin. Myelin is a protein that coats the nerve fibers and acts as an insulator. Without myelin, the nerves in the brain and spinal cord malfunction, leading to the symptoms of multiple sclerosis.
