A person with moraxella pneumonia has inflammation and swelling of the lung, caused by an infection with the bacteria, Moraxella catarrhalis. The inflammation can cause fluid to collect in the lung, which can prevent oxygen from entering the bloodstream.

Moraxella catarrhalis is the most common cause of bacterial pneumonia in those who have chronic bronchitis or COPD.
