What is mononucleosis?
A person with mononucleosis has a viral infection caused by Epstein-Barr virus or cytomegalovirus. Mononucleosis is more common in college-age adults. Most people with this infection recover completely without treatment within 2 to 4 weeks. In some cases, the illness results in prolonged episodes of fatigue. Images

How does the doctor treat mononucleosis?
There is no cure for mononucleosis. Treatment for mononucleosis includes rest, oral fluids, sore throat sprays and lozenges, warm saltwater gargles, and acetaminophen or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications for pain and fever. Those who have severe throat swelling may require treatment with corticosteroids.
