A person with mesothelioma has abnormal cells in the lining of the lung that multiply out of control. These cells can form tumors and spread to other parts of the body.

Mesothelioma is a rare but aggressive form of cancer. It has been strongly associated with prolonged exposure to asbestos. About 7% of people with occupational asbestos exposure develop mesothelioma.
