Menopause Underlying Cause
Menopause occurs naturally in women between the ages of 43 and 55. It usually occurs very slowly, as ovulation becomes less frequent and as the production of progesterone and estrogen decrease over a number of years.

Other causes for menopause include:
  • Surgical menopause:
    • Removal of the ovaries
  • Medical menopause:
    • Medications that block the effects of estrogen
