  • Spinal Meningitis
What is meningitis?
A person with meningitis has inflammation of the dura, a protective lining that envelope the brain and spinal cord. Meningitis can be caused by infection with bacteria, viruses, parasites, or fungi. Viral meningitis is more common than bacterial meningitis. Bacterial meningitis is a serious infection that results in death unless it is treated early. Images

What are the symptoms of meningitis?
Common symptoms of meningitis include a headache, neck pain, neck stiffness, and a high fever. Other symptoms include nausea, vomiting, fatigue, confusion, lethargy, and unresponsiveness.

How does the doctor treat meningitis?
The treatment of meningitis depends on the underlying cause. Viral meningitis only requires supportive care, and in most cases, will go away on its own. Bacterial meningitis is a life threatening infection that requires treatment with antibiotics in the hospital. With prompt treatment, most people will recover.
