What is malaria?
A person with malaria is infected with the parasite, Plasmodium. The parasite is transmitted to humans by the bite of an Anopheles mosquito. These mosquitoes are present in tropical and subtropical climates. Malaria can cause death if it is not treated early. Worldwide, over 300 million people have malaria each year. What are the symptoms of malaria?
Initial symptoms of malaria include fever, chills, headache, muscle aches and fatigue. Symptoms of worsening malaria include pale skin, diarrhea, jaundice, brown urine, vomiting, swelling, abdominal pain, confusion, lethargy, and seizures. Images

How does the doctor treat malaria?
Treatment for malaria includes antibiotics, specific anti-malarial drugs, and acetaminophen or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications for pain and fever.
