A person with malaria is infected with the parasite, Plasmodium. The parasite is transmitted to humans by the bite of an Anopheles mosquito. These mosquitoes are present in the tropics and subtropics. Images

Worldwide, over 300 million people develop malaria each year. Malaria can cause death if it is not treated early. About 1.5 million people die from this disease each year.
