A number of enzymes are required for the breakdown and absorption of nutrients from the intestines. Abnormalities in any of these enzymes can cause malabsorption.

Conditions that cause malabsorption due to enzyme deficiencies include:

• Cystic fibrosis
• Enterokinase deficiency
• Lactose intolerance
• Lipase deficiency
• Sodium-bile acid cotransporter
• Sucrase-isomaltase deficiency
• Trehalase deficiency
