The evaluation of lymphoma begins with a medical history and physical examination.

Physical findings in someone with lymphoma may include:

• Lymph gland swelling
• Lymph node swelling in the neck
• Swollen lymph glands are rubbery and nontender.
• A lymph node that is 2 cm or larger suggests the diagnosis of lymphoma, particularly when they are located above the clavicle or in the armpit.
• Liver enlargement
• Spleen enlargement

Testing is necessary to confirm the diagnosis of lymphoma.

Tests that may be used to evaluate lymphoma include:

• Coagulation profile
• Lactate dehydrogenase level
• Erythrocyte sedimentation rate
• Complete blood count
• Peripheral blood smear:
• Usually shows abnormally high numbers of lymphocytes. The lymphocytes will also have an abnormal shape, size or character when viewed under a microscope.
• Liver profile
• Kidney profile

Other tests that may be used to evaluate lymphoma include:

• Bone marrow aspiration and biopsy
• Lymph node biopsy
• Chest x-ray
• Bone x-rays

Imaging tests that may be used to evaluate lymphoma include:

• CT scanning of the abdomen
• CT scanning of the chest
• CT scanning of the head
• MRI scanning of the abdomen and chest
