The evaluation of lymphadenitis begins with a history and physical exam.

Physical findings in lymphadenitis may include:

• Lymph node swelling and tenderness in the armpits
• Axillary lymphadenitis
• Elbow lymph node swelling
• Groin lymph node swelling and tenderness
• Inguinal lymphadenitis
• Lymph node swelling and tenderness in the neck, over the collarbone
• Cervical lymphadenitis
• Lymph node swelling and tenderness in the neck, under the jaw
• Lymph node swelling and tenderness in the neck, around the ear

Testing may be necessary to determine the cause for lymphadenitis.

Tests that may be used to evaluate lymphadenitis include:

• Blood cultures
• Complete blood count
• Lymph node biopsy:
• Open lymph node biopsy
• Needle biopsy of lymph node
• Bone marrow biopsy
