What is Lyme disease?
A person with Lyme disease has an infection caused by the bacteria, Borrelia burgdorferi. The bacteria are usually passed to humans during a bite from a deer tick. Lyme disease is rare. Early treatment of Lyme disease usually results in complete recovery.

What are the symptoms of Lyme disease?
Symptoms of Lyme disease include a red rash that looks like a target, which usually forms around the site of the tick bite. The rash is thought to be present in more than 70% of lyme disease cases. Additional symptoms of Lyme disease include joint pains, headache, muscle aches, and fever. Symptoms of severe Lyme disease may include facial drooping, irregular heartbeat, mild confusion, and joint swelling.

How does the doctor treat Lyme disease?
The treatment for Lyme disease includes antibiotics, and acetaminophen or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications for pain and fever.
