The evaluation of lupus begins with a history and physical examination.

Physical findings in someone with lupus may include:

• A rash on the face:
• In the shape of a butterfly
• Rash on the hands
• Hand swelling (bilateral):
• Located in the joints of the hands

Testing is required to make the diagnosis of lupus.

• Anti-mitochondrial antibodies
• Antinuclear antibody (ANA)
• Antithyroglobulin antibodies
• Erythrocyte sedimentation rate

• Platelet count
• Complete blood count
• Rheumatoid factor
• White blood cell count
• Kidney biopsy
• Lymph node biopsy
• Chest x-ray
• Urinalysis
