The evaluation of lung cancer begins with a history and physical exam. Physical exam is usually normal.

Physical findings in someone with lung cancer may include:

• Barrel-shaped chest
• Decreased lung sounds
• During examination with a stethoscope
• Wheezing
• Unintentional weight loss

Tests that may be used to evaluate lung cancer include:

• Pulse oximetry
• Complete blood count
• Kidney profile
• Serum electrolytes
• Pulse oximetry
• Chest x-ray
• Bronchoscopy
• Sputum cytology:
• Tests lung mucus cells for cancer
• Blood telomerase
• CT scan of the chest
• MRI scan of the chest

• Mediastinoscopy:
