A person with a lung abscess has a cavity in the lung that is filled with pus. Pus is a collection of infected tissue and cells that fight infection. Images

A lung abscess is usually caused by a bacterial infection. The bacteria invade the lung tissue and start to grow. The body forms a wall around the tissue in order to fight the infection.
