The evaluation of a leg injury begins with a history and physical exam.

Physical findings in someone with a leg injury may include:

• Laceration
• Puncture wound
• Abrasion
• Leg bruise
• Deformed leg
• Inability to move the leg
• Leg swelling (unilateral)
• Leg tenderness (unilateral) overlying the bone
• Leg numbness (unilateral)
• Leg weakness (unilateral)

Tests that may be used to evaluate a leg injury include:

• Leg x-rays:
• Normal tibia and fibula
• Fractured upper tibia at the knee
• Fractured leg just above ankle with x-ray
• Fractured lower tibia and fibula with x-ray
• Fractured fibula
• CT scan
• MRI scan
• Bone scan
• Extremity ultrasound
