A person with kidney stones has small crystals in the urine that have enlarged to form stones. Large stones can block the flow of urine in the ureters, which drain urine from the kidneys and into the bladder. Images

About 1 out of 10 people in the US will suffer from kidney stones at some point in their life. Most kidney stones pass through the urinary tract and do not require treatment.
