The evaluation of keratoconjunctivitis begins with a history and physical examination. An eye exam is performed with a slit lamp.

Physical findings in someone with keratoconjunctivitis may include:

• Blurry vision
• Corneal ulcer
• Swelling of the conjunctiva:
• Eye redness
• Cloudiness of the cornea
• Swelling of the eyelid
• Swollen glands in front of the ear

Tests that may be used to evaluate keratoconjunctivitis include:

• Viral culture of the tears
• Staining of the cornea
• Visual acuity testing
