Kallmann's Syndrome Overview

Another name for Kallmann's Syndrome is Hypogonadotropic Hypogonadism.

What is hypogonadotropic hypogonadism?
A person with hypogonadotropic hypogonadism does not reach puberty, has small sexual organs, and has infertility. A male with hypogonadotropic hypogonadism has abnormal testicles that do not produce normal levels of the sex hormone, testosterone. A female with hypogonadotropic hypogonadism has abnormal ovaries that do not produce normal levels of sex hormone, estrogen. Hypogonadotropic hypogonadism is caused by decreased production of a hormone by the hypothalamus. The hormone, called gonadotropin-releasing hormone, is the first step in a process that stimulates the testicles in males, and the ovaries in females. Most cases of hypogonadotropic hypogonadism are inherited.

What are the symptoms of hypogonadotropic hypogonadism?
Symptoms of hypogonadotropic hypogonadism include incomplete sexual maturation during puberty, infertility, and short stature. Symptoms of hypogonadotropic hypogonadism in males include small testicles, decreased libido, erectile dysfunction, decreased muscle strength, and diminished aggressiveness. Symptoms of hypogonadotropic hypogonadism in females include absent menstrual periods, and pain during sexual intercourse.

How does the doctor treat hypogonadotropic hypogonadism?
Treatment for hypogonadotropic hypogonadism includes hormone replacement therapy.
