Jaw Dislocation Evaluation
Evaluation of a jaw dislocation begins with a history and physical examination. Images

Physical findings in someone with a jaw dislocation may include:
  • Inability to open or close the mouth normally
  • Jaw pain:
    • Worse during speaking or chewing
  • Jaw swelling Images
  • Mouth does not close properly:
    • Upper and lower teeth do not line up correctly Images
  • Tooth fractures Images
  • Tooth avulsion:
    • Loss of a tooth
Tests may be required to make the diagnosis of a jaw dislocation.

Tests that may be used to evaluate a jaw dislocation include:
  • Facial bone and jaw x-rays Images
  • Panorex study: Images
    • Often the best x-ray
  • CT scan of the facial bones Images
