What is pruritus ani?
A person with pruritus ani has persistent itching around the anus. Pruritus ani may be triggered by allergies, constipation, hemorrhoids, or infections.
What are the symptoms of pruritus ani?
The most common symptom of pruritus ani is anal itching that is worse while sleeping and after a bowel movement. Additional symptoms pruritus ani may include anal pain, and redness or swelling of the skin around the anus.
How does the doctor treat pruritus ani?
The treatment for pruritus ani depends on the cause. General treatment for pruritus ani may include warm baths, gentle cleansing of the anus, corticosteroid creams or lotions, and oral antihistamines for itching.
