Ischemic Bowel Disease Types
Four main types of ischemic bowel disease include:
  • Mesenteric artery embolism: VideosImages
    • A clot from the heart gets stuck in the artery that supplies blood to the intestine.
  • Mesenteric artery thrombosis: VideosImages
  • Mesenteric vein thrombosis: VideosImages
    • A blood clot forms in the vein that drains blood from the intestine.
  • Nonocclusive mesenteric ischemia: Videos
    • The intestines do not receive adequate blood flow, due to heart failure, shock, or bleeding.
