A person with iron deficient anemia has a low number of red blood cells and low levels of iron in the bloodstream. Images

Iron is required to make hemoglobin, which carries oxygen inside the blood cells. Without sufficient amounts of iron, the production of hemoglobin and red blood cells decreases. Iron deficient anemia can be cured with iron supplements and treatment of the underlying cause.
