What is intestinal disease?
A person with intestinal disease has a problem with the function or structure of the intestines. The intestine absorbs nutrients from food and liquids. The entire intestine is about 22 feet long in an adult. Intestinal disease may affect the small intestine or large intestine. The most common type of intestinal disease is inflammation of the intestines, called enteritis. Enteritis may be caused by toxins, infection, or a medication side effect. Images

What are the symptoms of intestinal disease?
Diarrhea is the most common symptom of intestinal disease: the stool may be watery or bloody, or it may contain yellow or green mucus. Additional symptoms of intestinal disease may include cramping abdominal pain, fever, nausea, vomiting, weakness, fatigue, and weight loss.

How does the doctor treat intestinal disease?
Treatment of intestinal disease depends on the underlying cause. Treatment may include a special diet, vitamins, anti-inflammatory medications, and antibiotics.
