A person with insomnia has difficulty sleeping. Insomnia may include difficulty falling asleep, waking frequently during the night, or waking too early.

About 1 out of 3 people in the US have periods of insomnia. Mild cases of insomnia resolve without treatment. Severe episodes of insomnia respond to treatment and counseling.
