Infected Ear Canal Cyst Overview

What is an infected ear canal cyst?
Sometimes a cyst can form in the skin that lines the ear canal. Over time the cyst can enlarge and may become infected with bacteria. If the cyst becomes large enough, it can block the ear canal and reduce hearing.

What are the symptoms of an infected ear canal cyst?
Symptoms of an infected ear canal cyst include loss of hearing, ear pain, ear discharge, and ear itching. The ear canal may appear red and swollen, and there may be swollen lymph glands in the neck or behind the ear.

How does the doctor treat an infected ear canal cyst?
The doctor may recommend earwax removal, irrigation of the ear canal, antibiotic eardrops, and pain medication for an infected ear canal cyst. You may require admission to the hospital for intravenous antibiotics if you develop a severe ear infection.
