Inability to Conceive Evaluation

The evaluation of infertility begins with a history and physical exam for both partners.

The physical exam in someone with infertility is usually normal.

Testing is usually necessary to determine the underlying cause of infertility. The tests that are used to evaluate infertility in men are different from those used to evaluate infertility in women.

Inability to Conceive Female

A pelvic examination is performed in all women with infertility.

The monthly release of an egg from the ovary is called ovulation. The body temperature increases when a woman ovulates. Body temperature measurements may be used to detect ovulation.

  • Pelvic ultrasound
  • Hysteroscopy:
    • Examination of the inside of the uterus
  • Hysterosalpingogram:
    • An x-ray contrast study of the uterus and fallopian tubes
  • Laparoscopy:
    • Examination of the inside of the pelvis

Inability to Conceive Male

Tests that may be used to evaluate infertility in males include:

  • Semen analysis:
    • Evaluate the sperm count, shape and mobility of sperm
  • Blood testosterone level
